Broken Bones

Published by Dorlita Jones under Mommyhood,Parenting

Wednesday my daughter broke her arm at school. I was home when I received a call from the school nurse saying that she had fallen off of the swing and hurt her arm. I could hear her in the background crying and screaming. The nurse said that she thought I should take her to the hospital just to get it checked out.

I immediately knew that it had to be a bad fall by the sound of her crying. I jumped up to get Tori and myself dressed so that we could get going. The school is about a 20 minute drive from where we live. I felt like it was taking me such a long time to get out of the house and it was only about 15 minutes. I felt like a bad mom, I should have just run out of the door in my pajamas and got in the car. That is what I kept thinking.

When I arrived at the school I went straight to the office and asked for the nurse. She was in the main office talking on the phone and told me to wait a second. “What, wait did you not just call me about my daughter’s arm! Get off the phone now!” That is what went through my head at that moment. I stayed calm but… I stood there eyeballing her with my facial expression saying I will slap that phone out of your hand if you don’t hang it up right now. I want to see my daughter.

She finally hung up and said your Taegan’s mom right and I said yes. We walked into her office and my poor child was sitting there with a splint on her arm, with red eyes and a sad face but she had stopped crying. She looked like they do in those horror movies where somebody is being chased and they fall and break an arm or leg and the medical student that’s running with them puts a splint on them. I took a peek under the bandage and her arm was crooked. I knew it was broken. I took her straight to the emergency room.

When they called her name to go into the triage room we went in. The nurse unwrapped the splint and bandages and I wanted to burst into tears. She told me on the side that it was definitely broken. I had to contain myself because I didn’t want to make her cry. She was such a big girl. She didn’t cry once the entire time we were at the hospital. So then I had to be a big girl too! This is the first broken bone for me. I never broke any bones as a kid but my best friend broke her arm when we were about 11 or 12 and I wanted to have a broken arm to match hers. She fell off of her bike while we were out riding. So I tried falling off my bike to break my arm but it never happened. So when she had the cast taken off I put it on so that I could feel like she did. That was cute back then but how goofy do I think that was now. I have to laugh about it.

Anyway my daughter’s arm is broken right above the wrist. Both bones are broken. I finally got to ask her how it happened and it was because some girl pushed her off of the swing during recess. What a way to start the school year. School has only been in for 2 weeks. Now she can’t do recess, gym or any other sports for the rest of this year. What a bummer.

Here is a picture of her X-ray.
