Smartphones Could Replace Debit And Credit Cards
Just a little breaking news I heard about and decided to do a little digging on. I found this to be very interesting. AT&T and Verizon which are the largest mobile companies are planning on coming out with a new way to pay for your purchases using your mobile smartphones. And T-Mobile may hop on board the ban wagon. It would rid us of having to carry our trusty plastic debit and credit cards. So this got me to thinking. On one hand it seems to be a good idea. We use our smartphones to do so much already these days. A lot of us already manage our banking and credit card accounts using our devices. We also pay some of our bills using that same device so how much easier would it be to swipe our phones to pay for our everyday purchases. If your anything like me I like to keep track of what I spend as soon as I spend it. I have the Droid phone and I constantly use it to check my balances throughout the day as I spend. So it would benefit me to be able to use my phone to make the purchase and track it all in the same breath so to speak. They are already using this system in Japan, Turkey and the UK.
My only concern that popped into my head at the same time is if the increase of theft of cell phones that could occur due to this plan. How would we be protected from criminals that could steal our phones. I mean they steal debit and credit cards now and the card companies have fraud protection but at the same token the plastic cards have no personal information on them unlike your smartphone which has plenty of personal information stored on it. I will be keeping an ear open for more information on this plan. The companies will be testing this system in Atlanta and 3 other unnamed cities. So I will be looking for the results of the test. I will keep you posted.
